We Stress too Much

Stress is a vital biological response to internal and external threats. Fight or flight is one of the most basic of survival mechanisms. Without a stress response, we might sit stupidly as a lion charges us from across the grassland. While this is not a concern for the vast majority of people today, fight or flight remains very active.

It's important to acknowledge that human lifestyle has changed far faster then adaptation can adjust for. Our biological system updates cannot keep up with advances in technology, changes in lifestyle, extreme diet shifts and rapid increases in toxic exposure. We (humans) have an impressive talent for advancing and controlling our environment, but have created some very damaging climates for our mental and physical health. We stress about deadlines, relationships, expectations, appearances, being cool, bills & finances. Our stress response doesn't understand that catching all the red lights, or being late on a bill is not life threatening, so an exaggerated response is often triggered by activating fight or flight.

For many people, fight or flight is triggered more than a few times a week. Chronic activation of stress response can cause anxiety that can result in mental and physical consequences. Chronic stress response can effect digestion, cognitive function, hormone levels, mood, energy, sleep and more.

 Adaptogens for Stress

Adaptogenic herbs have unique properties and influences on the body's response to environmental and internal stress. This class of herbs have a "non-specific" and bi-directional influence on the HPA Axis (hypothalamus, pituitary adrenal axis), meaning they work in multiple ways to normalize or balance the activity of this system.

Adaptogenic herbs can build "adaptive energy" within the body that is used in a stressful event rather than depleting vital cellular energy. This "adaptive energy" can help protect the body from the negative consequences of chronic stress and improve the efficient response to acute stress.^

Adaptogen Definition (according to adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina & Stress Relief)

Adaptogen: (1) An agent that increases the body's ability to adapt to environmental and internal stress by strengthening the immune, nervous and glandular system. Enhances an organism's resistance to stress, disease and environment, as well as normalizing metabolic functions and increase metabolic efficiency.

 Keep Your Head

The constant hustle, bustle, and dumb political arguments can make you want to pull your hair out. The human body is highly sensitive to stress and if you're not coping with it all, your mind and body will suffer the consequences of oxidation, hormonal imbalance and fatigue. While healthy coping mechanisms like exercise, reading, yoga, etc. are essential to a balanced mind-body, nutrition and supplementation can be hugely impactful. Adaptogenic herbs help the body respond less dramatically to anxiety and stress.^

Important Considerations:

Anxiety and the body's ability to cope with stress is strongly tied to the body's overall health. Consider auditing your diet and lifestyle to make sure you're consuming foods that nourish the body without introducing toxicity. Brain chemistry and activity is directly influenced by gut health and microbial composition. Reducing gut inflammation, gut permeability and microbial damage should be a priority and will only improve the effectiveness of Whole Body Apothecary Anxiety Tea. Consider reading the works of Dr. David Perlmutter and Dr. Michael Greger who extensively discuss the influence of gut health on the entire mind-body.

Adequate sleep is a very important factor in mood and anxiety management (and all other mental and physical processes). A consistent sleep cycle (circadian rhythm) is completely necessary to optimizing health. Prioritize 6-8 hours of sleep each night and bright light exposure. The human body is designed to wake up and go to bed with the sun. When you wake up, expose yourself to natural sunlight for at least 15 minutes and continue to get some natural light throughout the day. At night, try to limit your exposure to artificial light (computer screens, TV, phone screens, etc).

Directions:

Shake bag to make sure herbs are evenly mixed. Scoop 1 tbsp of tea into a loose leaf tea brewing method of your choice (we use a Bodum French Press). Pour 8oz of water at 195deg F and steep for 6-8 mins depending on your patience and desired strength. Strain and pour. Add natural sweetener as desired (we use stevia). If 195 is too hot for you to drink, add some cool water after tea is done brewing. Use common sense when consuming hot drinks. ENJOY!
