Our Body Salve is formulated with organic, unrefined plant oils that provide the skin with tools and nutrition to rebuild itself. Since we don't use any water or synthetics in our formula, the Body Salve does not irritate already irritated skin.
Compromised skin is especially sensitive to synthetic and barrier disrupting ingredients. The focus should be addressing inflammation, replenishing nutrients and rebuilding the lipid barrier.
Your skin is an active organ that interacts with everything you put on it. Just like the rest of your body, it needs certain nutrients to function at its healthiest potential. Our Body Salve is formulated with organic plant oils that compliment each other to provide a full spectrum of fatty acids (short, medium and long chain). This variety provides short and long term moisture, protection and healing properties^.
It's common practice in the skin care industry to heavily refine (process) plant oils (even certified organic products). The refining process makes an odorless, thinner, more neutral oil to makes products more consistent in color, texture and scent throughout production. This process also strips a large amount of the plant's nutritional value (vitamins, minerals, proteins, polyphenols, etc.)
Our products are crafted with extra virgin, unrefined plant oils that provide a super dense variety of nutrition. This is why our products may vary in color from batch to batch. The slight variations, in color and scent, of our products are caused by the slight variations of the plants themselves from harvest to harvest. These differences are mostly influenced by environment (rainfall, temperature, soil composition, time of the year, etc.)
Firstly, water typically dilutes the moisturizing properties of lotion to less than half the formula. This is a waste of packaging and a waste of money. Secondly, and more importantly, water requires a lot of chemicals that provide no benefit to the skin. As soon as you put water in a lotion formula, it must be preserved with a broad spectrum bactericide to have any practical commercial shelf life. Beyond that, chemicals are added to "push" ingredients past the lipid barrier of the epidermis. These chemicals can damage the skin in the short and long term by destroying the skin's natural ability to retain moisture and causing inflammation. Inflammation can cause acute irritation or go unnoticed until chronic inflammation damages collagen and elastin production. Even organic lotions contain harsh preservatives that can disrupt the skin's lipid barrier and microbial flora (alcohol is the most common organic preservative).
Take it easy. Even if you have really dry skin, start with just a little. We typically recommend starting off with a little pea size for and area the size of both hands or one forearm. Once you rub the salve in, you can add more as necessary.
This stuff is not the same as lotion or water based creams. Lotions are super diluted (typically 80% water for a good emulsion), while containing penetrators and drying agents. You can lay the lotion on thick sometimes and still be needing a little more. NOT WITH OUR BODY SALVE. This product contains ZERO% water and ZERO drying agents.
